DG Do Gooder: March 2011

"I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip through Mizzou and a foundation called Won By One to Jamaica. The experience was life changing and I really got to learn a lot about myself and the Jamaican culture.
The mission trip included me and 41 other mizzou students. We traveled to an impoverished town in Jamaica called Harmons, where we stayed at a place called the Harmony House that Won By One provides for missionaries.
While we were there, we opened up a shop that donated clothes to the Jamaicans in need. The clothes that were donated were brought by us from the US in huge suitcases. Each student brought 100 lbs of clothing on the trip. We also built two houses in the week that we were in Harmons. Each house was being donated to a Harmons native who was picked by Won By One to be the recepient. While building the houses, we had the chance to work one-on-one with Jamaicans who were teaching us what to do. I also had the opportunity to go to the only school in Harmons and teach a fourth grade class. The school included grades K-12 and was very under staffed so they needed all the help they could get. I loved learning from the Jamaican kids including how to say things in Patois, a Jamaican language.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience that I will never forget. I met people that touched my life and will do so for forever. I learned the true meaning of Won By One's mission statement, 'Changing Lives By Changing Lives.'"
Way to be a DG Hannah and not only Do Good here in Columbia as a member of Mu Chapter, but also across the world!

DG Do Gooder- October

It is a bit late (try 5 days late) but the DG bloggers wanted to still bring you October's DG Do Gooder... October's Do Gooder is pledge class 2008 member Molly Clay!
Why was she nominated?
Molly organized all of the events that were a part of Anchor Splash. This year Anchor Splash raised $14,000 dollars, the most ever! Almost all of the credit goes to Molly and her crazy organization skills and countless hours she spent planning.
In her own words:
When you first found out you were director of anchor splash after slating what was your initial reaction?
I thought Oh no what have I gotten myself into!
I thought Oh no what have I gotten myself into!
What was the hardest part of your job?
I would say the hardest part was just staying on top of everything that needed to be done, and keeping everything organized.

What was the best part of your job?
A lot of the girls in the house who I didn't know before offered to help me out, so I really enjoyed getting to meet them all.

How do you feel about how much money you were able to organize DG to raise?
I am so excited that I was able to be a part of such a successful event this year, and it couldn't of happened without the help of everybody in DG!
Will you be dreaming of boys in speedos forever?
Well of course, after seeing those dances who wouldn't?

DG Do Gooder - August
Name: Jessica Hughes
Pledge Class: 2007
Why she was chosen: Pledge class 07' member Jessica Hughes spent the summer in Gaborone, Botswana. Not only did she explore the African culture, but she also spent time working in a village - for this, Jessica is Mu Chapter's August Do Gooder. Congrats Jess! Read below to learn about her summer adventure and check out some amazing photos...
In her own words: "I participated in a public health exchange program in Gaborone, Botswana, near South Africa. I enjoyed the culture by living with a Batswana family and spending part of my time in the village of Mochudi. I took a public health class and a class on the culture and language in Botswana, which is called Setswana. Three days a week I had an internship in a public clinic. At the clinic I observed the general doctor and helped with wound wrapping and packaging pills for the pharmacy. However, I spent the majority my time observing in the HIV/ AIDS clinic. There I would see patients with the doctor and help where I could with consultations. I also spent some of my free time volunteering at a soup kitchen for orphans in a poor area of the city. I was lucky enough to attend the US vs. Ghana world cup game and to go on a safari in the Chobe national park.
It was an amazing experience, and I wish I could have stayed longer. One thing that I found to be very interesting is to see what it felt like to be in the minority. I learned that although many people think of Botswana and the United States as being very different places, the people are really not that different. It made me appreciate the differences I did see, but also to realize that we have many similarities. I realized that it is important to make the goals of our country goals that can really improve the quality of life in other parts of the world too."

DG Do Gooder - July
Delta Gamma teaches us to live by the motto Do Good - so in effort to share about all of the good Mu is doing in the community and on our campus, we are going to start monthly posts about our members who are true Do Gooders and exemplify what it really means to Do Good.
So who has the honor of being our very first Do Gooder? Read below to find out...
Name: Catherine Beehler
Pledge Class: 2009
Why she was chosen: Catherine has a busy summer - she is working, taking a summer school class, AND volunteering at two different hospitals. Her hospital work lets her help patients and get great work experience that will help her when she is a nurse someday.
In her own words: "I am volunteering at Menorah Medical Hospital in outpatient registration where I check in patients who are coming in for surgerys, ultrasounds, cardiac rehab, blood draws, etc. Pretty much if you go into the hospital to get anything done to you, I check these people in. I am also in the oncology office where I deliver labs, wheel patients to destinations, make patient charts, file patient information etc.
The other hospital is Saint Lukes South Medical Center and I volunteer in the emergency room. This is alot more hands on and it is very active and busy. I organize all the medical materals they use on patients during a medical emergency, clean beds and surrounding areas after a procedure, and check on patients if they need anything. I also get to sit in and watch procedures that are being done on patients and watch the doctor nurse interaction with them which is really cool!
My experience in the hospitals has been great! I have really enjoyed being in a hospital atmosphere and watching how much compassion there is and how every employee or volunteer has a friendly positive attitude putting the patients health and saftey first. It has been an eye opening experience of what goes on in hospitals and confirmed the reason why I wanted to go into nursing!"
